Sussex Cattle have evolved over many hundreds of years.  It is believed that the Sussex Breed of today is descended directly from the red cattle that inhabited the dense forests of the Weald at the time of the Norman Conquest.

Glowing reference to the breed is contained in Arthur Young’s “Agriculture of Sussex” dated 1793.  The Petworth Herd of Sussex Cattle was founded over 200 years ago and produced, in 1984, the R.A.S.E. Burke Trophy winner, Petworth General 26th.

Society documents give details of Sussex calves registered since 1840. The first Official Herd Book recording calves born form 1840 was published in 1879 and the Sussex Cattle Society was incorporated under the Companies Act in 1890.

Memoranda and Articles are laid down for the constitution of the Society, which is non-profit making.  The business of the Society is conducted by a Council of 16 elected Members who appoint a Chairman and other officers who retire by rotation every four years.  Special sub-committees are convened by Council as required.

The day to day running of the administration is based at the Registered Office where a full time Secretary is employed.

The Sussex Cattle Society was formed:

To maintain the and improve the breed of Sussex Cattle, and to do all such further acts and things as shall be conducive to that object.

To further the above objects by continuing the publication of the Sussex Herd Book.

Two Official Society Shows and Sales of Pedigree Sussex Cattle are held each year in April and September/October.  Our Approved Auctioneers to the Society, Hobbs Parker, will accept commissions for the purchase of Sussex stock and hold details of stock for sale.

A register of pedigree breeding stock on offer for private treaty sale is retained by the Society and is published on the website.  Particulars can be obtained from the Secretary.

A Panel of Breed Judges is available to advise on the selection of Sussex breeding stock .

In order to maintain Breed Standards, the Society requires that all bulls be inspected and passed by the Society prior to registration.

Herd Books giving pedigree information are available from the Society Office and are free of charge to member breeders.
